AJ Lealofi: A State Champion Defensive Playmaker

The Barstow Aztecs (Barstow, CA) have a productive and physical defensive playmaker in AJ Lealofi. The 6’2”, 190-pound safety is coming off a strong senior season where he played a key role on a state championship team, consistently making his presence felt throughout Barstow’s playoff run.

Lealofi capped off his season with an interception in the CIF State Championship, making a play against a quarterback who rarely turned the ball over. Earlier in the playoffs, he added a pick-six in the semifinals, showing his ability to change the game on the defensive side of the ball.

On the season, he totaled 82 tackles to go along with 8 interceptions, consistently being around the football while contributing in both run support and pass coverage. His size and physicality allow him to play downhill, while his instincts and ball skills show up when the ball is in the air.

He earned All-CIF Southern Section honors at defensive back, along with Daily Press Athlete of the Week recognition, and was selected to a High Desert All-Star Game. He also played a key role in helping Barstow secure a CIF State Championship.

While he comes from a smaller area, it’s easy to see how his skill set can translate to the next level. A long and physical defensive back who produces and makes plays in big moments, Lealofi projects as a strong safety with the ability to play in the box and make plays on the ball.

Lealofi is set to continue his football career at Riverside City College, where he will continue developing and look to elevate his recruitment to the next level. He also carries a 3.5 GPA, showing his ability to handle both academics and athletics.

Off the field, his faith in God plays a major role in his life, giving him strength, guidance, and keeping him grounded through everything he faces. He is very thankful for his mom and dad and their constant support, with his father’s experience as a coach helping shape his understanding of the game. His mom continues to be a strong presence in his life, always encouraging him and helping him stay strong through everything.

He also honors both of his grandfathers who are in heaven, carrying their love and lessons with him in everything he does. Lealofi credits his coaches for helping shape who he is, teaching him discipline, hard work, and focus. He remains grateful for his family, loved ones, and supporters who continue to stand by him throughout his journey.
